My name is Duane, and I’m on a very exciting journey. I’m doing what most people only dream about but never seem to “get to.” I’m pursuing my dream, and I want to invite you to come on this journey with me. I believe that together, we can set an example for the rest of the world to follow. We can achieve our own unique greatness, and then we can turn around and help others do the same. I call it joining the favored few.

I first heard this businesswoman share this piece of wisdom at a conference I attended when I was fresh out of college. It resonated with me so much at the time, that it set me on a path to joining this elite group of individuals who simply do not settle for the status quo. I’m proud to say ten years ago, I joined the ranks of the favored few, and I’d like to help you to do the same.

 

You see, when I graduated from college in 1996, I stepped out into the real world totally excited about my future. However, there was one small problem. I had no clue about how I was going to make a living, much less what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

 

At the same time, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the rest of my life; I just didn’t know how to make it happen at that point. As a result, like so many people do at that stage in life, I put my dream on the shelf, vowing that someday I’d return to take it back down and fulfill it.

 

As a result, I spent the next six years of my life hopping around nine different jobs. Finally, after those brutal first six years, I landed a job that paid the bills and allowed me to think about my future. I ultimately came to realize that the thing I wanted most from my life was that thing I had placed on the shelf years prior. I wanted nothing more than to be a professional speaker. Still one problem; I didn’t know how to do that.

 

But I did something that most people never do: I made a commitment that I would become a professional speaker before I knew how I was going to make it happen. That’s right, I made a commitment and then I immediately took action. And that’s what we’re going to talk about in this book: How to go from where you are to where you want to be – even if you’re not sure exactly where that is yet.
